I’ve been suffering from a case of impostor syndrome, as a result this blog has been left untouched for the last 8 months, basically because I felt like I couldn’t find my “voice” let alone own it.
Bottom line I didn’t feel qualified enough.
I have been needlessly worrying that people would read my posts and think to themselves “what the fuck does she know”, and “who made her the bloody expert?” (Let’s not even go there with regards to the grammar police )
As a result, I have been putting it off, whilst bull shitting myself, saying that when I have read this book, or done this course, I will then “know” enough to share my point of view. Only then would I be worthy enough to own my voice.
But I can tell you now, all I have gained is wasted time and missed opportunities.
The universe doesn’t like to be ignored, it’s been getting louder and the signs to own my voice despite the fear and risk of not being good enough have been coming thick and fast.
I knew the only way to answer was to begin telling my story, even though owning and sharing my voice is the most terrifying thing I could ever do.
I can’t be quite any longer. And you shouldn’t either.
So how on earth do you go about finding your voice?
Well first up, you stop looking for it outside of yourself!
No seriously, you don’t need to go “find” your voice, it’s been inside of you this whole time, just waiting for you own it.
Fact is YOU are unique and it is your uniqueness that sets your voice apart from everyone else.
The reality is not everyone will like you. Not everyone is going to agree with what you have to say, and not everyone will read what you write.
People may talk shit about you on social media. Just remember what others think is none of your business. What matters is that you feel inspired to share your voice.
One of the issues I was struggling to get my head round, is why would someone want to read a blog post that’s already been written a thousand times already by other bloggers?
And then I realised, it’s because people want to hear your point of view. They want you to stand for something. They want you to share what you feel to be true.
It’s the same when friends and family come to you time and time again for advice, it’s because they want to hear your perspective and they value your voice.
To be honest with you, I’m not even sure I can say I’ve fully found my voice yet. It’s like a quest that doesn’t seem to end, it is a constant re-tuning as the essence of who I am neverendingly evolves and grows.
So how do you surrender and own you voice?
Stop resisting the universe, we both know it won’t be ignored. It will continually throw shit in your direction until you answer! – Believe me I have learned the hard way over the years!
If like me, you are called to share your voice, then your actions and words need to be in harmony with your beliefs and values.
When you sit rooted in fear, you are not living a fully authentic life.
It’s NOT who you “think” you should be, or what you “think” you should write, there is no “should” in authentic – Just do you!
Once you start living authentically, you start giving yourself the life you deserve.
You will gain the confidence to start to face your fears head on. You will be able to fully embrace your voice, so that you can use it to express yourself, to help others and to change the world.
We all have to deal with doubt, insecurity and fear, to be fearless enough to own your voice, you have to make peace with that, and find the courage to use it anyway .
Stop comparing yourself, stop looking for people’s approval, this is your life and you are the only one with your unique perspective.
All in all, I don’t have all the answers, I’m learning, and I hope my learning helps yours!
Now it’s your turn…I would love to hear your perspective, please leave me a comment below.
